San Sebastian 2006 - 43rd International fireworks competition, or as the spanish call it:

43 CONCURSO-FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE FUEGOS ARTIFICIALES - DONOSTIA

The competition has been held at San Sebastian for many years and had some truly stupensous displays by the worlds best. It looks from this years line-up that the southern european style display is favoured with only the Ukain display company "Pyro Show" the exception. Usually the winner from the UK's Plymouth fireworks competition go on to fire at San Sebastian, but it appears the the Spanish have deceided they have some better options this year.

This year it spans the 13 - 20 August and starts every night in the square just by the beach at 10.45pm.

The participants and the night they are performing, are as follows:

13th Aug - Pyro Show - Ukraine

14th Aug - Pirotechnia Marti - Castellon

15th Aug - Luso Pirotechnia - Portugal

16th Aug - Piro Quiles - Valencia

17th Aug - Pirotecnia la rosa - Italy

18th Aug - Ricardo Caballer SA - valencia

19th Aug - Pyro Limited fireone- Malta

20th Aug - Caballer Vincente Caballer - Valencia

This year Phoenix fireworks will be at the show to catch up with old aquantances and to watch the truly awsome displays from some of the best and loudest display companies in Europe. The week starts with:

Pyro-Show, founded in 1992 by a group of Russians with extensive experience in pyrotechnics that started in the Soviet Union era. They are now a leading display company in the Ukraine with a team of 20 in-house Pyrotechnicians operating all over the Ukraine working in more than 150 cities and towns. They perform about 450 display shows a year.

Their display style has been influenced by the Russian firework law that focusses upon no buring firework debris to touching the ground whatsoever. This has caused Russia firework display companies not to use leader match on their shells and fire electric ignitors directly into the shell lifting charge.

Luso Pirotecnia Group from Portugal was founded in 1995 who produce artistic solutions combined with traditional Portuguese pyrotechnics. They won at the Festival de Arte Pirotécnica de Cannes in 2003 and Festival Internacional de Pirotecnia «Les Nuits de Feux», Chantilly, France in 2004

Piro Quiles, a well respected Spanish company based in the spanish heatland of fireworks who, like many others from Valencia, have a poncion for a mean mascletà (as an aside take a look at the TVW clip of their mascletà at Magdalena 2006, the db meter peaks at 114, which must have been sited in a diffent town or was being sat on by a capatious Spanish rear!) It looks like their display will have a reasonably loud finale

Pirotecnia la rosa - Has been going for three generations and create sympatico presentations with a combination of artistry, computers (FireOne) and chemical wizardry from their 60,000 sq.m. factory and laboratories. Their cylinder shells are highly rated and produced in the best Sicilian tradition.

Ricardo Caballer SA is a family company that split off from the Vincente Caballer organisation. Richardo was one of the Caballer brothers that wanted to go his own way and has gone from strength to strength since. Their fireworks manufacturing capability is good and their passion and great execution for fireworks puts them into the front runners to win.

Pyro Limited fireone The tradition of Maltese fireworks goes back to the days of Knights of Saint John in the 16th century. It continued during British rule and became more sophisticated and intricate though the influence of Italian pyrotechnical experts at the turn of the 20th Century. Pyro Ltd are distributers of FireOne computer firing technology.

Caballer - Vincente Caballer Calatayud founded the company in 1880. In 1976 D. Vicente Caballer Ramirez, took over as present MD

One hundred twenty-five years of experience, mixing tradition and technology. 500,000 square meters of factory, 130 buildings for manufacture and an impressive 80,000 kg of storage, makes them the front runner to win this competition. (And the fact that they have been put on last day of the week, plus they usually win, are Spanish and are very good!)
